Research meets diplomacy: Europe as a Global Actor

Hosted by: European Commission
05 Jun 14
And will end on: 05 Jun 14 18:00

The Directorate General for Research and Innovation of the European Commission and the FLASH-IT FP7 project organize a conference to foster exchanges between researchers from Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) FP7 projects and policy-makers on the theme of EU foreign policy. Over the course of the Seventh Framework Programme for Research (FP7), the Socio-economic Sciences and Humanities (SSH) programme has financed various projects on "Europe in the World".

In its Societal Challenge 6 "Inclusive, Innovative and Reflective Societies", the Strategic Programme under Horizon 2020 equally foresees social scientific research on "Europe's role as a global actor" for the period 2014-2020, alongside an embedding of social sciences and humanities in other Societal Challenges with international dimensions (e.g. environment). The discussions in the various panels will highlight key policy-relevant results of projects and help to identify the role that social sciences and humanities, and scientific research more generally, can play in fulfilling unmet policy needs.

This full-day conference will be organized around four thematically organised panels focusing on:

  • EU's capacities as a global actor
  • EU's neighbourhood policy in the Mediterranean area
  • EU's relations with the wider world - sustainable governance of natural resources in the framework of EU-LAC relations
  • EU's relations with the wider world - the EU’s role in the Asia-Pacific region
